Southern Gold Coast

1. Tarte Tea Garden

miniature Tarte treats, Gold Coast high tea

The Tarte treats come in miniature size. (Image: Supplied)

In a rare turnout of southern beaches love, high tea landed in the no-longer-sleepy suburb of Currumbin in April 2025. Tarte Tea Garden, another extension of the cult Burleigh Heads bakery/cafe located next door to Tarte Beach House, brings a touch of fancy to the made-for-SUP-boarding Currumbin Creek. Step through a garden arch to find green and white umbrellas, sweet bistro tables and a cluster of potted blooms and plants, all hidden behind tall foliage to shield you from the outside world. Stroll in further to discover a Tea Bar stocked with more than 10 Noble & Sunday leaf varieties, while an adjacent sweets cabinet showcases miniature versions of bestselling Tarte treats including the dulce de leche crueller, strawberry glazed tart and brown butter choc-chip cookie.

The best thing about this spot is you can create your own tower on the spot if you haven’t pre-booked a table, making it hands-down the best last-minute high tea on the Gold Coast for non-planners. If you are a planner, however, expect to add salmon, cucumber and tomato bagels to your steeple, plus flavour-packed chicken finger sandwiches and obligatory scones with cream and jam. It’s the full hog here despite the chilled, cafe-style vibe.

As for washing it all down, choose from Tarte’s famed ‘Cloud’ drinks which tops sweet concoctions with melt-in-your-mouth flavoured foam, or dive straight into Australian Traveller’s preferred poison: the ‘Chocolat chaud à l’ancienne’, a porcelain tea pot filled with thick, utterly sublime homemade hot chocolate paired with a dessert glass of fresh cream — ‘cause if your hot choccy isn’t floating with velvety blobs of unadulterated dairy, is it even a real hot chocolate?

Price: $55 per person, which includes one hot or cold drink

When: Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 2pm, and you must book your high tea in advance to lock in the full shebang

Address: 2 Thrower Dr, Currumbin

Central Gold Coast

2. Palm Court at The Langham Gold Coast

a hand reaching for mini desserts atThe Langham, Gold Coast

Give in to luxurious sweets at Palm Court.

In a super sophisticated nod to its namesake in London, where traditional English afternoon tea was served inside the city’s flagship Langham more than 150 years ago, the stunning Palm Court inside The Langham Gold Coast does its heritage proud.

Follow that signature Langham scent (the international hotel chain label it Ginger Flower, FYI, and they waft it real good via spritzable fragrance and candles) just past the main lobby where a light-flooded, jewel-hued dining area is dotted with plush white couches and marble-topped dining tables. While the vibe is very Vogue Living, the airiness of the space (those floor-to-ceiling picture windows crawl up to extreme heights, creating an all-encompassing glass honeycomb of straight-up sunlight) invites you in without pretentiousness, prepping you for next-level service and perfected goodies.

The Afternoon Tea menu changes with the seasons and even welcomes in special brand partnerships (Paddington once inspired a themed experience), but you can always rely on toasty warm scones served with cream, lemon curd and raspberry preserves created by in-house pastry chefs, sweet tarts, bite-sized blinis dressed in crab and the like, cucumber tea sandwiches with cream cheese, sourdough crumpets with rainbow trout and a wide selection of champagne and sparkling wine, all while overlooking the hotel’s dazzling lagoon pool.

Price: $95 per person, which includes tea and coffee — you’ll need to fork out extra to make things boozy

When: Daily from 11:30am and the final seating is 4:30pm

Address: 38 Old Burleigh Rd, Surfers Paradise

3. SkyPoint Bistro+Bar

a fruit bowl on white background at SkyPoint Bistro + Bar at Q1

The Sky Tea for Two’s assorted sweets are irresistible.

Head to the city’s highest dining and entertainment destination, SkyPoint on level 77 of the Q1 Building in Surfers Paradise, and hone in on its Bistro+Bar where high-flying bites are devoured in style. To complement views that extend from the surf to the hinterland and beyond, the team offer ‘Devonshire Tea for 2’ which arrives with a trio of jams and cream as well as your choice of tea or coffee. A nearby cake cabinet full of sweet treats, plus the option of adding a glass of bubbles to your equation, create something of a deconstructed high tea on the Gold Coast — but those views cement its fancy day out status plenty-fold.

Price: $25 for two people, which includes scones with tea or coffee. You’ll pay additional for sweets and bubbles

When: Daily from 11:30am

Address: Level 77, 9 Hamilton Ave, Surfers Paradise

4. Pearls Bar at Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort

Sink into the plush chairs for a tasty high tea.

Peering over tropical trees and the Pacific Ocean, plus one heck of a resort pool speckled with sun lounges and lush lawns, Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort’s Pearls Bar is an elevated high tea on the Gold Coast. Score a seat by the window if you can, where bench seating puts you right over gorgeous people watching below. The scene around you, however, is equally enthralling as velvet lounges, carpeted floors and shiny tables dial up the luxe (it’s worth noting that upon our last visit, the wired chairs by the window weren’t quite as lavish as the rest of the setting, though cushions made them comfortable enough and, well, those views).

As for the food, the team theme their high tea offerings around seasons and nature-led inspiration. Regular menu items span smoked salmon finger sandwiches and fruity cakes paired with crafty cocktails that tie into the theme.

Price: Roughly $79 per adult, which includes one cocktail and unlimited tea and coffee. Bookings are essential

When: Daily from 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Address: 71 Seaworld Dr, Main Beach

5. Le Jardin at the Imperial Hotel

While the future of the Imperial Hotel, formerly Palazzo Versace, remains uncertain, there’s still plenty to love about its high tea offering which continues to attract both in-house and non-hotel crowds. This high tea on the Gold Coast is staged inside the hotel’s lobby bar, Le Jardin, filled with vividly hued armchairs, opulent chandeliers and vaulted ceilings (they’ll never shake those Versace roots entirely).

Its Couture High Tea is served on beautiful China alongside your choice of barista-brewed tea or coffee, while the nibbles span Moreton Bay Bug rolls, egg and cress pinwheels, cheesecake, vanilla bean Choux buns and more. Got your (lucky) littlies with you? There’s also the Little Royal High Tea, encompassing white chocolate scones with sultanas, ham and cheese toasties, cookie sandwiches and more.

Price: $69 per adult and $30 per child aged between four and 12. Bubbles are priced on top

Exclusive: The new SOL Elements bathhouse is a Japanese-inspired dream

hero media
The unique tranquillity of Japanese bathing culture can now be experienced in a Queensland rainforest.

I’m the first official guest at SOL Elements, an elemental bathhouse located in Mt Tamborine, roughly 50 minutes inland from the Gold Coast beaches. The town is already a calm-inducing hinterland heaven as birdsong echoes over rolling hills and roadside avocado shacks pop up around many corners. But with the arrival of SOL Elements, Mt Tamborine evolves into a wellness destination. Let me take you through the experience.

The new bathhouse is set in the calming hinterland. (Image: Timothy Birch)

First impressions

The exterior of the new SOL Elements Bathhouse in the Gold Coast hinterland

The setting delivers maximum serenity. (Image: Timothy Birch)

Given the jaw-dropping rendered photography released by the team in January 2025, I wondered if SOL Elements could meet the hype. Additionally, the location is at the end of a large car park at Tamborine Mountain Glades’ Thunderbird Park, an iconic kid-friendly hinterland attraction, so I was curious as to how they’d bring the Zen.

Surprisingly, no shrieking children are heard as I approach one architecturally magnificent facade. Positioned off a small lake dubbed Lotus Lake, swimming with turtles and ducks, it features thin timber boards that gradually fan out via meticulous three-millimetre increments. More than 2000 metres of hand-charred wood, burnt personally by Russ Raven, who founded SOL Elements with his wife Shae Raven, make up the entrance and much of the interior walls, channelling the ancient Japanese art of wood preservation, Yakisugi. It’s an aesthetic that pops amid bushland without ever jarring. It’s dramatic yet graceful, bold yet grounded – a lot like what’s going on inside, really…

Communal bathhouse

Communal bathhouse at SOL Elements

The communal bathhouse is circular with treatment rooms branching off from a garden. (Image: Timothy Birch)

Positioned to take in the entire breadth of that fairytale lake, three small outdoor thermal mineral pools are the cornerstone of SOL Elements’ communal bathhouse, which caters to just 30 people at a time. While the warm pools bubble at a toasty 38 degrees, the cold plunge drops to an icy 12 degrees.

There are two ways to soak up some hot and cold therapy. The first starts inside SOL’s Cedar Wood Sauna, fitted with bench seating and extensive windows that let in more Lotus Lake views, before I go 90 full seconds in the cold (I’m aiming for two minutes, but it’s still winter). The sauna is small, and I’m grateful to be in there alone, but six or so people could fit in here comfortably.

Sit around the sunken fire pit at SOL Elements Bathhouse

The second way to hop between hot and cold is via the showstopping submerged outdoor fire pit. I take a seat on its curved bench seating and watch the flames flicker against my serene view. Sitting in wet cozzies, I feel reinvigorated, ready to dip in and out all over again.

Then there’s the communal Earth Lab, a mind-blowing alchemy station. Before I hit the showers, I’m invited to spoon out two ingredients from a bar filled with salts, flowers and powders. Utterly delighted to personalise my sensory journey, I go for the ground coffee and hibiscus flower petals before pumping body wash into my palm and creating an exfoliating polish. It’s hard to ignore the likes of raw brown sugar, chamomile flowers, rose petals and spirulina powder (there are 10 options in total), but my blend is straight-up delicious.

Himalayan Salt Sanctuary

The Himalayan Salt Sanctuary at SOL Elements

There’s one other communal element at SOL: the Himalayan Salt Sanctuary, featuring a gasp-worthy design (and gasps are welcomed, given the respiratory benefits salt therapy is famed for).

Built with illuminated salt bricks that morph between sunrise shades, pale pink and clear white, the room radiates as I breathe in negative ionised air. Bench seating wraps the entire space while three stunning pendant lights glisten, dialling up the drama. It feels as though I’m sitting inside a lantern, all while my lungs are high-fiving me as I attempt further breathwork.

Floatation caves

For the ultimate sensory deprivation experience, two Floatation Caves are calling. Located right next to the Himalayan Salt Sanctuary, the rooms open to beautiful all-black stone fit-outs. Magnesium salt water is heated to complement your unique body temperature. Epsom salt and Dead Sea salt are expertly utilised to create the most extensively filtered water in Queensland. This is magnesium magic on steroids.

Once the doors shut, it’s completely dark. I float blissfully unaware of my surroundings; waterproof headphones ensure total immersion.

Secluded Suites

an outdoor mineral plunge at SOL Elements

The onsite accommodation features a heated private mineral plunge. (Image: Kristie Lau-Adams)

I step up my SOL Elements visit by booking one of its two Secluded Suites, and the experience is end-to-end luxurious. Facility-wise, the suite (which caters for groups of up to five) gives me my own infrared sauna, single-person cold plunge, shower, private Earth lab with four ingredients, mini-bar with mocktails, tea station and clay mask, all while floor-to-ceiling glass windows throw up more of those soothing views.

The cherry on top? An outdoor private warm mineral plunge right by the lake. I sip on an organic, caffeine-free lemon myrtle and ginger root tea as the afternoon slips by. But before I go, there’s one more unmissable element to indulge in.

Massages and treatments

Inside the treatment rooms at SOL Elements Bathhouse

Up the ante with a rejuvenating massage at one of the two onsite treatment rooms. (Image: Timothy Birch)

I dress in a plush black waffle robe and stroll a couple of doors down to one of SOL Element’s two treatment rooms. I’m booked in for the Earthing Immersion as I love hot stone massages, and this features stones gathered with permission from Indigenous elders right around Australia. How special is that?

For so many reasons, but mainly the skills flexed by therapist Milena (who specialises in stretching), this is a massage like no other. I’m asked about my mood and lifestyle before Milena tells me she’s reading my energy. I’m not typically partial to energy readings, but I can’t deny that my limbs surrender under the hands of Milena, who uses Synthesis Organics’ essential oils that smell divine.

The stones differ in size and shape, heated and rolled across me like Café de Paris butter. 90 minutes later, I feel weightless as I return to my Secluded Suite to shower again and, begrudgingly, depart. I’m truly transformed into jelly. It took Shae and Russ four long years, but SOL Elements manages to live up to every expectation before soaring far beyond.
