A thoughtfully reimagined boutique hotel will open in 2026, offering elevated accommodation options on Kangaroo Island.
There are many reasons to visit Kangaroo Island, off South Australia’s coastline, southwest of Adelaide. The wilderness and dramatic coastal rock formations are unmatched, for one. Prolific native wildlife, for another. Then add an enticing artisanal culinary scene. But now, there’s one more luxurious reason, and it comes in the shape of a historic hotel – once known as Kangaroo Island Seaview Motel and now launched as The Ellson Hotel.
About The Ellson Hotel

Established in 1924 in Kingscote as Kangaroo Island Seaview Motel, the property is the island’s oldest operating hospitality site. Once owned by the Ellson family, it was sold to the current owners in 2020.
After a significant fire on the property in 2023, it’s currently undergoing an extensive multi-million-dollar redevelopment with plans to reopen in December 2026. The new chapter of this 100-year-old hotel will be introducing 49 thoughtfully designed guest rooms, including premium dwellings and accessible options. Think earthy tones and coastal chic decor. Also on the grounds, find landscaped outdoor spaces for lounging.
“Our vision was never simply to update a motel," said owner Yen Aun Leow. “We wanted to create a hotel with soul – one that honours the people who came before us while offering a fresh, contemporary experience for today’s traveller. The Ellson Hotel is about…thoughtful design and creating meaningful connections with Kangaroo Island."

Looking for luxury? Check into the premium The Ellson’s Suite. With plenty of room to move, a plush king bed, a luxurious standalone bath and premium upgraded amenities. Not to mention uninterrupted views across Nepean Bay.
The Ellson Hotel is designed around genuine, personal hospitality. It also provides a way to slow down, reconnect with nature and experience Kangaroo Island’s simple pleasures through local stories, produce and people.
