Things to Know
Located roughly 270 kilometres west-northwest of Melbourne, about a three-and-a-half-hour drive away, the Grampians/Gariwerd is renowned for its natural beauty and gold rush history. Each of its towns, from Ararat to Penshurst, offers a unique slice of this diverse region, whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or foodie.
Perhaps the best-known area of the region is the Grampians National Park, which features dramatic sandstone mountains and world-class hiking trails, and is rich in Aboriginal heritage. An abundance of wildlife call this protected land home, including kangaroos, emus, koalas and eastern pygmy possums.
The best time to visit is in spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and wildlife and wildflowers are abundant.
Getting Around
You can use public transport to reach the Grampians, but undoubtedly, the best way to get around is by car. A road tripper’s heaven, this region is home to some of the most scenic roads in Australia that pass through charming historic towns, wineries, cosy accommodations and scenic landscapes, all of which are by far more accessible by vehicle.
